The name "Na Nebozezu" (At the Auger) originates from the vineyard of the same name which used to cover the area and which followed the shape of a winding road leading up to the St. Lawrence Church. A house - probably a wine press - used to stand at the site of today's building as early as the 15th century. At the end of the 17th century, Karel Maxmilian Lazansky, independent lord of Bukov and Manetin, built the present building as a summer house. In 1809, Bohumil Haase, a Prague printer, became the owner of Nebozizek. He established a ramblers' restaurant here and named it Hasenburg.

Since 1891, a funicular railway has been operating to the top of Petrin hill. This was originally unique in being water powered: water was poured into a tank under the passengers feet in one car at the top station. The water's weight pulled the other car - connected with the first one by a cable leading around a pulley at the top station - up along the rails. Once the first car reached the bottom station, the water was simply let out. The funicular railway was adapted for electrical propulsion in 1932 and reconstructed completely in 1985.
