The history of this locality dates way back into the past, to the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries when this spot was bustling with market activities. This merchants' settlement gradually gained more importance andsignificance, and in 1257 was given the city statute Nova civitas castro Pragensi by the Czech King Premysl Otakar II. The quarter was renamed as Minor civitas Pragensis or "Mala Strana" at the beginning of the l4th century, and this name has survived through the centuries till the present day. The original Gothic buildings were mostly ruined or burned to the ground during the Hussite wars, and in 1541 Mala Strana was hit by the Great Fire. Extensive Renaissance-style renovation of the quarter has been built over the Gothic foundations. However, the area gained its particular character in the Baroque period. Mala Strana is one of the most attractive quarters of Prague for tourists nowadays.

The House at the Red Lion mirrors its history. The first written records of this building originate from the l5th century. The preserved cellar rooms are from the Gothic period, whilst the Renaissance is visible in the painted beamed ceilings and the entrance portal provides evidence of the Baroque reconstruction. The most recent style, apparent in the gable of the house, is Classicism. All the historical elements are truly restored; the facade is particularly unique in its association with the famous 17th century painter of altar pictures, Petr Brandl, who was born and lived in this house.

Thanks to the thorough reconstruction of 1994-5, the House can offer the public the following historical rooms: restaurant facilities on the ground floor beneath Renaissance ceilings, two levels of cellar rooms with their Gothic vaults and also hotel-type rooms on the higher floors where the authenticity is emphasised by original historical furniture.
